MESSAGE FROM THE HCO PRESIDENT
Last revised 08/25/96
President Marvin Adviento is currently busy preparing for the 1996-97 school year. In his place, Vice President May Yong submitted this Welcome.
Greetings current and future members of HCO
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is May Yong and I am the
Vice President of HCO for this coming year. For the past two years, I
have participated in HCO, first as a member, then as Newsletter Editor,
and I am pleased to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of
HCO. Currently, I am a senior Biochemistry major, interested in
professional (eg Med School) as well as graduate school. HCO has
really stimulated my interest in both directions through the speakers
and opportunities that it presents. Thus I encourage all of you,
whether you may be interested in professional or graduate school, to
become a member of HCO. All of you out there are probably saying
something like: (a) Sure, why not? I'll join...it'll look good on my
resume. (b) No...I'm not sure if I want to join. I don't want to commit
to anything right now. (c) Who are you guys again? What do you
guys do?
For those of you who may have talked to me during orientation,
allow me to tell you how this club can really help you: (a) For those
of you who are 100% sure of the field you want to go into, HCO can
help by focusing your interests even further. For example, if you
already know that you want to go into microbiology research, you can
request that we have speakers on different topics of microbiology.
You may be interested in what one of the speakers does and perhaps
join his/ her lab sometime in the future or work with other
specialists that the speaker recommends to you. Furthermore, you'll
be able to talk about what you've learned through such experiences
in an interview or essay for professional or graduate school.
(b) For those of you who think you may want to go into a field,
HCO presents opportunities for you to gain further insights into the
field which will allow you yo make up your mind. For example, if you
are thinking of becoming a doctor, you can join volunteer programs at
local hospitals. Such an experience will help you to decide what you
really want. Through dealing with patients, you may discover you
really don't like working with sick people. On the other hand, you
may learn that you want to become a pediatrician.
(c) For those of you who really aren't sure about anything...
perhaps and undeclared major, HCO can help you by introducing you
to a variety of different fields. By coming to our meetings, you'll be
exposed to careers you may have never heard of. For instance, did
you know that music can play a role in nursing homes? There are
specialists out there who deal with this topic.
(d) If nothing else, join our club just to enjoy our socials and have
the opportunity to meeting other people. (This is especially important
to commuters and new students.)
For whatever reason, join HCO. It is a great opportunity for all of
you. Hope to see you at the meetings!
-May Yong
